Case Study: Maintained Special School
Ysgol Pen Coch, Flint
Therapies Lead: Gavin Shakespeare
Soundbops for Complex Needs
Ysgol Pen Coch is a state-run school for children with Additional Support Needs in Flint, Wales. The school specialises in therapies and education for children with complex layered needs. Therapies Leader Gavin Shakespeare purchased some Soundbops units to see how the children in his school would adapt to Soundbops and its educational materials.
Inclusive by Design
Gavin first purchased Soundbops out of “Curiosity. The product looked interesting and I thought some of our pupils would enjoy it.”
Soundbops brightly coloured bops, simplified notation, and inclusive educational materials seemed like a good place to start for introducing some of his pupils to the foundations of music.
An Easier Way to Explore Music
Gavin’s curiosity paid off as after introducing the Soundbops to his classes he found that “The pupils enjoy sorting the bops, the different instrument settings and the easy to follow colour patterns.” Soundbops’ ten unique instrument sounds and stripped-back sheet-music made it a great tool for students to experiment with music in a fulfilling and accessible way.
A Gateway to Start Learning Music
After testing the product with different pupil groups and classes, Gavin told us that “I am generally pleased with the product, the children enjoy spending time on it and it's a great gateway to start learning music.”
